In the Elgin Service Manual, in the Parts section, there's a listing for 'Pinion, Cannon for curved or spherical reg. or flat Nite-Glo'. I could understand why you'd need a different cannon pinion for curved dials - you need to raise the hands farther to clear the higher dial center.
