What happens if I change the date at the wrong time?

So I understand that with many watches you are not supposed to change the date when the mechanism is engaged. I get that.What I want to know is what the end result will be if you do.In particular on a Zenith with the Grande Date.I have one that is skipping some numerals and was wondering if this might be a symptom of someone having done this or will they date mech just completely stop working?
