De-magnetizing a watch

Could someone please briefly describe how this process works? Does the watch need to be opened up, or is it as simple as making a pass or two with a de-gausser on the outside of the watch? If I take the watch to a repair shop, could I expect to have this done while I wait?Thanks for any info.

Another new addition!

Picked this one up a few days ago. I wanted a nice 3 hand and ended up getting a little more than I bargained for as far as complications goes. The power reserve complication was a real nice touch to this highly accurate Miyota 9100. I am very happy with it. Purchased a stainless mesh bracelet for a mod on it.
