"Starter" watches

Here's something I'd like to hear some opinions on: what do you think are common starter brands, as in watches that get you started down the path to WISdom? It's obvious that Tag Heuer is one judging by all the replies in the thread asking what was your first serious watch. It could even be a specific watch that gets you into one brand.
