Strap versus band

I'm realitively new to collecting Hamilton vintage watches. I've noticed that most if not all of the photos of Hamiltons posted in this forum contain leather or similar straps instead of metal bands.I prefer the leather straps because they're more comfortable on my wrist. Sizing a watch bracelet?

So here's what I THINK is the correct method. Push the pin out the direction of the arrow imprinted on the inside of the bracelet, and put the pin back in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the inside of the bracelet. It makes no sense to me to push the pin back in by pushing it the same direction you did to remove it. Is this correct?I know that was worded awkwardly, but I hope you guys get the meaning.
