Is my watch... broken?

This just arrived about a week ago, and having never owned a mechanical timepiece myself I thought it would be best to ask the "experts" before I pass judgement myself.A picture is worth a thousand words~(Sorry for the poor picture)I can never seem to get the day/date to set correctly. Perhaps I am just missing something, but it seems as though I'll set it right one day, then the next day it will spend half the day like this, only to finally change a day too late. Whats worse, the day dial also

Lighter fuel?

I read recently that using lighter fuel, i.e light grade petrol is acceptable when cleaning watch movements.Question: Will it have an adverse affect on the shellac used to insulate the coils in quartz watches or are you supposed to dismantle the movement first? ThanksBrew
