I just saw a Lord Elgin Black Knight on Ebay, listed as a 'Manufacturing Mistake', and thus with a BIN price of $3250.The seller is claiming that Elgin 'forgot to stamp the serial number' on the 680 21j 8/0 movement, and thus this is a one-of-a-kind item - hence the roughly $3150 excess. It's not. Elgin made the 680 from about 1950 until probably 1955-57, and they stopped putting serial numbers on movements after 1954. There are two other 680s on Ebay at this very moment with no serial number
Courtesy of olivedrab:In the 1990s and 2000s the U.S. military issued performance standards for watches, based on results expected, not details of construction and appearance. Commercial watches that met the standards became accepted military supply items along with specialized watches that still had military specific designs. By the time of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many military personnel wore the watch they personally preferred rather than a standard GI watch.
